Become a Realtor®

If you are interested in becoming a Realtor® you must be a licensed real estate Salesperson or Broker in Vermont.

The steps are as follows:

1. Attend and pass an approved pre-licensing class (online or classroom)
1. Becoming a Salesperson: In Vermont, you must be at least 18 years old and successfully complete a 40-hour salesperson pre-licensing course before taking the state exam. The Vermont Association of REALTORS® offers salesperson pre-licensing courses four (4) times a year – two day sessions and two evening sessions. See VAR’s Course Calendar to register.
2. Becoming a Broker: You must be a licensed salesperson for two years with eight (8) closed transactions within the past two (2) years and take the 40-hour broker pre-licensing course before you can take the state exam. See VAR’s Course Calendar to register.
   
2. Schedule and take the licensing test, National and State versions

1. Examination Information:  The Vermont Real Estate Commission and the Vermont Board of Appraisers contract with PSI Exams to administer real estate and appraisal license exams on their behalf. Click here for Vermont’s schedule and instructions.
   

3. Decide which Broker office you will be working with
1. Salespersons in Vermont must work under a licensed Broker
   
   
4. Apply for license from Real Estate Commission

5. Apply for membership to National Association of Realtors®, Vermont Association of Realtors® and Southern Vermont Board of Realtors® (one application to become a member of all three).  Details on this process can be found on the Become a Member page of our website.
